Mangum students among Rural Scholars embarking on summer program to study rural issues

STILLWATER – The Rural Renewal Initiative at Oklahoma State University has announced the 2024 Rural Scholars for this summer’s research and service experience across the state. The Rural Scholar internship program features 10 weeks of residency in rural Oklahoma communities where OSU undergraduate and graduate students study the top challenges of rural areas in Oklahoma and the world.

Local flood control dams save property and lives

Each year the state’s network of 2,107 small watershed upstream flood prevention dams prevent an estimated average of $96 million in reduced flood control damages and other benefits, according to statistics provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The dams provide flood protection for more than 14,000 bridges and thousands of miles of county road and state highways. The dams are located in 61 of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. Oklahoma has more upstream flood control structures than any other state.

Oklahoma Chautauqua 2024 is set for May 28 – June 1, 2024. The evening performances will take place on the Western Oklahoma State College campus at 2801 N. Main St. in Altus at 7 p.m. Attendees are asked to please park in the North parking lot and enter through the North door. Daily workshops are scheduled at 11 a.m. at the Altus Public Library, 421 N. Hudson in Altus and 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Western Prairie, 1100 N. Hightower in Altus.
