After an impressive win last week with the Tiger defense shutting out Healdton, the Mangum Tigers hit the road to face Comanche last Friday. This was the Tigers 2nd game of the season with Comanche hitting the field for the first time.
Playing on the scout teams going head up with the Varsity starters is . . . a right of passage of sorts for a young man. To rephrase it . . . Every varsity starter took his turn running the opposing teams’ formations and assignments as seen on game films each week.
This was maybe the 10th rep of this drill. This was after school middle of the last week. It was 108° There were five groups like this where one player was facing a double team block with the objective of not giving any ground. I try to look in on the linemen first anytime I go to practice or a game. The play of the bigs upfront will determine the success of the 2023 season. So, I try to give as much attention to this bunch as I can. It is the group that is blamed first for failures and the last group credited in times of success.
I was able to get some time with Mangum Head Coach, Sam Powers, to talk about the 49-0 win over Healdton during zero week of the season. The following is that exchange.
If Friday night’s performance by the Tigers over Healdton is any indication of things to come, then fans are in for a real treat this year. It was hot, causing the game to be delayed 30 minutes to allow more shadow on the field.
